Is blood thicker than water when it comes to a rescue tube? Our recent post about the dangers of using a ripped or cracked old style vinyl rescue tube has received a lot of interest. Due to this interest, as well as a video article recently featured on Lifeguard TV®, we decided to do a quick test to determine the absorption rate of a blood like fluid into the exposed foam of the old vinyl rescue tube. As shown above, the blood like fluid, even after a few seconds, is easily absorbing into the foam. A portion of the fluid drained off during the test, but the majority remained on the tube, continuously permeating deeper into the product. This rudimentary test clearly demonstrates the hazards to the victim / rescuer caused by blood and / or other hazardous bodily fluid absorption into the exposed foam of a vinyl coated foam rescue tube.
